K Club Special (Part 11) - Colleen Corby (Part 2)

0
0
Well, it's time for another K Club Special post on Colleen Corby.  She is probably the best known of the catalog models of 70s because of her extensive modeling appearances in magazines like Seventeen during the 60s.  She was a heroine to millions of girls during that time.

In some ways, since there are so many pics and websites of her out there, it is easy to find material.  So you would think it would be easy to do a post featuring her.  However, in some ways it is more difficult, because it's tough to come up with original material.  So in this post, I'll try to have pics that are not already out here on the web.  No guarantees there, but I'll give it a shot....

Here is a really nice pic of her from a Seventeen mag in 1969.  It was part of an article on "models without makeup." Just like today, there seemed to be a fascination with that subject.

Another pic from the same article.  Here Colleen is playing backgammon.  Remember that game?  It was super popular back when I was in college.  I haven't seen it played by young people in a long time.  I guess they are too busy with "World of Warcraft."

Another teen mag with Colleen on the cover.  She was on literally every other cover of those mags during the 60s.  Note the title "For Sophisticated Teens".  Somehow I doubt that would be a selling point with teens these days.   (R-eblogged from ColleenCorby.net. Okay, so much for original material, I tried)

Yes, she was everywhere.  Here is a Noxzema commercial commercial featuring her.
Thanks Blue Senshi for the video!  You have to love those old commercials.  They had a certain vibe to them that is lacking today.

Of course, we're going to get to some catalog pics......

Classic Colleen poses.  You also have to love the title "..turns out great performers."

Ahh, the early 70s.  A time where the psychedelic colors of the 60s gave way to more earthen tones.  Here they are trying to hype them up, nice try.  Also we have Kathy Jackson and Cay Sanderson in this pic.  Yes, their names begin with a hard K sound also, so I suppose they belong in the "K Club" also.  I'll be sure to do some specials on them in the future.

A very nice pic of Colleen. (courtesy of JJ's Playhouse).  She had that ability to pierce one's soul with those eyes!

Colleen is one of our four original "K Club" members along with Kathy, Kay, and Karen.    They often appeared together in the Big Book catalogs of the 70s.

However, it is pretty rare to find a pic of all four of them together (and I've never found a pic of just those four together).  Here is an pic from an Aldens catalog with Kathy and Kay.  But what about Karen?

Ahh, yes!  Here is Karen along with Colleen.

And here we have Karen, Colleen, and Kay together.  Yep, the "Longer Look" signaled the end of the mini-skirt era.  This was not a good thing.

More earth tone clothes of the early 70s.  Still Kathy and the other gals seem happy.  Well except for Colleen.  She's not smiling, but who can blame her with those knee-high white socks.  (Thanks to Blue Senshi for the pic)

An interesting note.  Yesterday (August 3rd) was Colleen's birthday.  I didn't really plan to have a post featuring her so close to her birthday.  I found out about her birthday date after I had already scheduled  several months of posts, so it just kind of worked out that way!

Random Goodness: Shirts, Skirts, and Assorted Miscellany (Part 2) !

One might argue that ALL the funkadelic fashions of the 70s were randomly good, and I would be hard pressed to disagree.  However, let's focus on the random goodness of shirts, skirts, and assorted miscellany of catalog fashions form the 70s.

Of course, I'm going to start with the skirts, and, oh, I don't know, what about some classic minis to get us started!!
And what would a post on 70s skirts be without some minis!  Yeah, the mini-skirt was more of a 60s thing, but they continued on into the 70s - thank goodness!  Here Kathy dazzles in three mini combos from 1972!

Yes, the era of the mini was a great time to be a young man.  We thought the good times would last forever...
What the ???? Yes, dear friends, it pains me to report that the mini gave way to the midi and, gasp, the maxi skirts in the mid-70s.   Kay and Karen still look great here, but, sigh, the mini was fading into the misty memories of glorious 60s fashions.

Surely this was just a short blip on the fashion radar, a wrong turn down a dead end fashion cul-de-sac that would quickly be rectified.  Surely the minis would be back soon!!
Ahhhhh, surely not!!

Oh well, the minis were great, but it's time to move on, time to let go......
Why this pic?  I don't know.  I guess it falls under the "Assorted Miscellany" category.

Well, let's see, we've covered skits, and miscellany.  Now it's time for some shirts...
Nothing particularly unique about tee shirts.  They're timeless, but the scarf?  I don't know.  That's sooo 70s.

Yes, yes, I know, they're blouses, not shirts, let's not get picky.  Here they come with matching watches, but of course, young people today don't wear watches (and they couldn't tell time on a dial watch or clock anyway, but I'm starting to sound like an old crank).

Still I miss the minis....
Yep, they will be missed by all.......

(Thanks to JJ's Playhouse for the last pic of Colleen).

The Big Book Catalog Series - Part 1 1970

0
0
We're going to start a new category where we take a look at the Big Book catalogs from each year of the 70s.  It is part of my continuing mission as a Historical Blogger to properly document this fascinating and pivotal era of modern history.

And first up is the 1970 (1).  This was a very interesting year for a number of reasons: the hippie era of the 60s had pretty well run it's course but the disco era was still several years away.  So, you see in the fashions of the early 70s a transitory mixture that is searching for the next big thing.  Also, 1970 was when Kathy first made her appearance in the Big Book catalogs, but it was still hit or miss as we shall see...

First up is a snapshot of some of the covers of the Big Book catalogs of 1970....
Yeah, it's far from complete.  The reason is that I got burned on several of them (no Kathy pics), oh well, there are still some groovy fashions to behold within.......

Yep 1970 was the start of something big alright.  However, these outfits still have that 60s era groove to them, far out man! (and remember when flying was classy and fun, not anymore!)

Like I said, I got burned on several of these catalogs.  Here in the Aldens 1970 Spring/Summer is the ONLY pic of any of the four K Clubbers.  Colleen was a catalog fixture in the 60s and continued to appear frequently in the Big Books all through the 70s.

Even the Sears SS 1970 catalog was bereft of Kathy pics.   Still we have Kathy Jackson (2), Cay Sanderson and Colleen to cheer us up with "3 Groovy Looks"..  This is a classic example of the fashion transition of the early 70s: The hem lengths still say 60s, but the brown earth tones say that the 60s are over!  (And Cay must have had some very strong quads to hold that pose!)

So when does our Kathy make her entrance into the Big Books? Perhaps in one of the summer catalogs? (3)
Well yes she does, but it's only one small pic that I'm saving for another topic.

The 1970 Sears and Aldens catalogs were pretty much busts on Kathy Loghry pics.  What about Penneys?
Yay!  Finally we have Kathy Loghry appear in one of the Big Books (Penneys SS 1970)!!  Certainly this was a great moment in catalog history!!  And with her trademark smile, she really lit those catalogs up!!

Not sure what "vervy designs" means.  It must be a 60s flashback sort of thing.  Like I said, the groovy-baby fashions of the 60s weren't quite dead yet!!  Like Colleen,  Kay Campbell also appeared in the Big Books of the 60s and was a regular well into the late 70s. (Nice purse that Kay is holding by the way, or is that a beer koozie?)

Penneys must have been where Kathy and Karen had their big break through in the Big Books.  The Fall / Winter 1970 edition was chock full of great pics of both.  You've gotta love those little smirks they've got on their faces here.  It's like "Yep, we're here and you're going to be seeing a lot of us in the next few years!"

1970 was indeed the "Start of Something Big".  Here Kathy has got her eyes set straight ahead on the future as her modeling career certainly was bright for many years to come!! (3)

footnotes: (Yeah, it's been a while since we had any, but any article of such detailed historical research is going to have some!)

(1) Yeah, okay, 1970 is technically the last year of the 60s, not the first year of the 70s (because there was no year zero, that's why the movie was titled "2001 A Space Odyssey", not 2000), but only about 1 in 50 people know that and only about 1 in 500 care.

(2) Kathy Jackson was a VERY popular model in this time frame.  However, I admit her career peaked when I was still somewhat young.  I do plan on a special post featuring her (and some of the other models).

(3) Is that a purse or a lunch box in the lower right corner???

Columbia Minerva Awesomeness Part 2 - Sweaters!

Like wow, has it been almost two years since our first post on the incredibly cool Columbia Minerva fashions!  Well yes it has, and for those of you not familiar with this DIY sewing rag, check out the first post on the subject...

http://kathyloghry.blogspot.com/2012/10/columbia-minerva-awesomeness.html

So let's see what else the fine fashionistas at Columbia Minerva were up to back in the 70s...

Shrink tops?  Hmmmm  I may be mistaken, but I don't think most gals want that! Oh wait they must be referring to the sweater vests.  Ohhhhh. (1)

They must have been on an elephant theme.  Check out Kathy's belt (two elephants fighting?) and the blue sweater on the bottom.  And yes in the pic above, I do believe there is an elephant too.  What gives?? (2)

Oh now we go from "shrink tops" to "flip tops." Groovy colors and awesome hats!!  However, I just don't remember any of these at the discos of the 70s.  It must have been the moms who got into this stuff.  They were like "Oh my little Sally will look so adorable in that purple sweater with green and red stripe sleeves!" But Sally is like "Uhh, gee, mom you shouldn't have, no, really, you shouldn't have."

The next two pics are completely random.  I'm not sure where they came from , but this seemed as good a place as any for them....

Karen obviously liked to play games.  (I think we all know how this one will end up, in a draw)  Still at least it's being playful.

And a really random pic of Kathy, not sure if this from Columbia Minerva or not.  However, that flower thing on the front looks like it weighs about 5 lbs.  The headband is groovy too!!

footnotes:

(1) Okay, these kinds of vests are not really popular where I live.  Mainly because we rarely have cold enough weather for them.  So I can be forgiven for not understanding all the various nuances of the genre.

(2) Actually, many years ago, I dated a gal who had a thing for elephants.  She had elephants everywhere in her apartment - elephant sculptures, elephant pictures, elephants on her plates, you name it.  It made it really easy to get her a gift.  But I'm glad it didn't work out.  Otherwise I might have a real life pet elephant today!

The Year in Review - Part 2

Man, has been another year already?!?  Yep, hard to believe but it's true.  We're coming up on the second anniversary of the Kathy Loghry Blogspot.   And just like the end of our first year, we'll take a look back at some of the best / choicest / zaniest pics from our second year......

You probably figured that I'd have this pic on the short list.  Vaya con Dios Fluffy the Rabbit, you will be missed.

Westward Ho for great His 'n Hers coordinates from the 70s - country style!

Skirts and dresses came in all different lengths in the 70s, such as these midis here.

And long dresses like here....

And here....

And now for the first of two pics that I selected from year two that didn't have Kathy in them....
I still have.no.words........

Kathy, Colleen, and Shelley looked great in this Vicky Vaughn ad! (1)

Oh yeah, the pants in the 70s were fantastic too!!

And the second non-Kathy pic for our year end review....
Aldens, you were spectacular in your awesomeness.  R.I.P.

The hot pants were "terry-ific"! (2)

I'm still trying to block access to that "Say Yes to the Dress" show at my house, but it's still popular with the young ladies at my home.

Bodysuits are always a favorite category, and you can see why here. (3)

Sleepwear is another category that I'm sure we'll see more of in the next year!

Kathy and Karen were certainly a pair back then! (2)

Oh, almost forgot about the minis of the early 70s! Sigh.....

And, you guessed it, I'm going to end the year - once again  - on a swimwear pic.  Duh!!!! (3)

I would like to thank all my followers for another fun year here at the Kathy Loghry Blogspot.  I really do enjoy running this blog and look forward to another year looking back at the great Big Book catalog fashions from the 70s.  So keep checking back often and keep those comments and feedback coming!!

Oh yeah, just like last year, we'll start off year three with a big K Club special.  I can't tell you who the featured model is, but let's see.  We've had specials on Kay, Karen, and Colleen again this year (along with some others).  So whose turn is it again?!?   Hmmm.  Well, you'll just have to check back in a week to find out!!

Can We Talk?

I must take a break from our normal posts on the catalog fashions of the 70s for a special post.  It is with great sadness to report that Joan Rivers passed away today.  I remember seeing her on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson when I was young.  I thought she was the funniest women - no scratch that - funniest person I had ever seen.  Her absolute frankness and complete dis-regard for what we now call "political correctness" was a fresh breeze in a world going increasingly closed and serious.....

Yeah they had their differences, but in the day, WOW what a pair.  There will never be another.....

K Club Special (Part 12) - Kathy Loghry (Part 2)

0
0
Welcome to the start of our third year at the Kathy Loghry Blogspot!  And wow, what better way to kick off a brand new year than with a K Club special featuring Kathy herself!! (yeah I know it seems a bit redundant, but so what?!?!)

Let's look back at just a few of the many pics from Kathy's career over the years.....

Kathy had a few appearances in Seventeen Magazine such as this Penney's ad here from 1970!

Another Seventeen pic was covered last year, but I thought I'd give everyone an update.
At first I thought this was some sort of tea party, but look at the bottom of this updated photo.
Yep, those, are ???potatoes????  Yes, indeed, they are.  Here is other page of the article.

Yes, it's about "potato pan flips".  Huh??  I'm more confused now than before.

Kathy also appeared in a number of magazine ads.  During the early to mid-70s, she was everywhere!!
Here she is in an ad for Landlubber jeans circa 1975.  You may remember that Landlubber had some rather risque ads back then.  However, here these gals keep it classy and fun!!

Kathy also made all the rounds in the various knitting mags back then such as here. A vest with strawberries was a "must-have" with every fashionista in the 70s! (re-blogged from My-Retrospace.Blogspot).

Naturally, we here at this blog know Kathy best from her numerous appearances in the "Big Book" catalogs of the 70s. Here are some examples during that decade....

A triple Kathy attack from 1970!!  Just too cute!!

Polka Dots from Aldens in 1972.  You just gotta love Kathy's hat!!

Simply a classic Kathy catalog pic from 1974.  The minis were still kicking back then, and somehow Kathy made them look sweet and innocent!!

One of the reasons that Kathy was one of the "go-to" models back then is that she could make anything look good - even this purple monstrosity from 1975.  A brave smile indeed as she shows off this purple pantsuit with cuffed bell-bottoms topped off with a purple scarf.  And where one would wear such as getup?  How about a.......farm.  Yeah, sure, why not???

One of the more popular Kathy catalog pics from 1977.  Actually, this outfit makes more sense to wear at the farm in the scene above. On the other hand, the purple outfit makes more sense to wear....oh never mind!

Yes, I'm looking forward to another here at this blog.  I know we're going to have lots of great posts of Kathy and the gang in the future!!

Spiegel Back to School Special!

Fall is here and with the fresh coolness in the air, it's time to look back on how the Big Book catalogs of the 70s got all the groovy kids ready for that first day of school!

Wow, these gals are ready to take the college campus by storm!  Busting through  the gates of higher learning is hard work, but that doesn't mean it can't be done in style and with a smile.  I imagine this campus was never quite the same again after this entrance! (1)

Yep it may be Autumn, but in the 70s, every season was mini-skirt season (Oh yeah).

Later in the semester and these gals are still all smiles and still stylish!  What a contrast between the drab, stern looking buildings and the bright 70s styles of our coeds!!  They are really heating up the cool weather on campus.

Minis, boots, and caps, oh my!  The question that I have is "where are all the guys?" (oh wow, that was a cheesy rhyme!)  I mean, come on man, with lovelies like this on campus, you can surely afford to miss class!  Oh, I get it.  All the guys on this campus were studious types (like me in college) and couldn't be distracted from their academic pursuits (yeah, right).

Of course, Fall naturally turns to Winter.  That means the minis have to be put away and all the students need to bundle up for the cold weather.  No matter!  These gals still kill it with in the happenest winter fashions from Spiegel.  Perfect for those semester ending finals or for going to the stadium to watch the big game, these coat styles will still turn heads!  For every back to school need, Spiegel had you covered during the grooviest decade of them all - the 70s!

(1) That is Jill Twiddy on Kathy's right.  She appears in all of the pics on this post.

A Brief History of This Blog

0
0
Over the course of this blog's history, I've gotten a number of inquires on various aspects of the Kathy Loghry Blogspot.  And since we are starting our third year, I thought it would be a good time to get everyone up to speed on how this blog began, how it evolved, and address its future.  And in a few weeks, I'll have another post on other aspects of this blog such as common questions I've received.

The Beginning

I didn't set out specifically to do a blog of this sort.  Rather I had wanted to do a more general nostalgia type blog, and I had actually sketched out a few concepts (they all stunk pretty bad).  It is awfully difficult to come up with something original and something of interest.  There are a number of great retro type blogs out there, and I didn't want to just do a knockoff of one of them.

Then late one night while perusing the internet looking for ideas, I stumbled on the site ShelleyHack.Blogspot.Com (1).  It is a very good blog that focuses exclusively on Shelley and her career.  I thought to myself "Hmmm, this is an interesting concept." And then it hit me "Hey, I could start a blog about one of the other popular models of the 70s and then use that as a jumping off point for other nostalgia subjects."

Eureka!  I had a solid concept that could work!  So the original plan was to focus on one model that was popular during the 70s to bring in viewers and then spin off into different directions: politics, history, fashion, etc of the 70s.

My first choice of a featured model wasn't difficult at all.  I immediately thought Kathy would be perfect.  She was everywhere during that time.  And she had that iconic smile that was unforgettable! That brings me to .....

The First Big Problem

One tiny, little problem: I didn't know Kathy's name.  Yeah I know that sounds weird - trying to start a blog not knowing the name of the featured person.  However, the creative process works in strange ways.

I did, however, know her first name - Kathy with a K.  That was it (2).  So I did a quick internet search and immediately got hits thanks to ColleenCorby.Net (another great site.)  They have a bunch of pics with the models names including Kathy, Kay and Karen.

Thank you ColleenCorby.Net!  Without the models' names on pics like this, I may have never been able to launch this site!

I then thought "Well, she probably already has some fansites." However, try as I might, to my utter astonishment, I couldn't find any.  Immediately I set up this site, found some pics floating around on the internet and published my first post.

The next morning, after I had sobered up a bit, I vaguely remembered launching the site "Oh no. What did I do?" That brings us to.....

The Second Big Problem

You can probably guess this problem.  If I started a website about someone without even knowing their name, then naturally I would launch it without having any material.  Yes, you read that correctly.  I had, oh, all of about 10 pics of Kathy which would be good for, oh, about 2 to 3 posts.  That was when I decided to post once a week (to give me some time to find more material).

So the first few months was a continuous, frantic search for material.  Basically as soon as I found some good pics, they were published the next week.  As you can imagine, that can't be sustained for long.

Fortunately I found some catalogs on Ebay and began to acquire them to the point that I have a pretty complete collection by now.  That has been one of the unexpected side benefits.  Collecting those catalogs, magazines, and ads from that era has been an absolute joy bringing back lots of great memories from the 70s.

Also I have been contacted by others that collect the same sort of material and have been able to trade with them (Thanks Blue Senshi and JJ of JJ's Playhouse!)  So by the end of the first year, the material crunch was over.

The only pic of Kathy that I had when I started this blog - obviously I needed more stuff and fast!

The Metamorphosis of the Blog

Like I mentioned, the original concept was to use the Kathy's pics as a launching pad into various topics on the 70s.  And you can see that vibe in some of the earliest posts.  However, that concept - as clever as it was - just didn't pan out.  During those early days, I actually wrote a couple of posts that I deleted without publishing - they were that bad.  The problem is this: the groovy pics of Kathy and friends just don't mix well with discussions on Vietnam and Watergate.

Very quickly, I realized that I needed to focus on the catalogs themselves and feature Kathy and the other models and their careers.  That was what people wanted to remember from the days of their youth (me included!)

The other three members of the original "K Club" - Karen, Colleen, and Kay show us the fun side of the Big Book catalogs! (pic provided by JJ's Playhouse!)

So I pretty much just dropped the whole nostalgia / retro idea.  I still spin off in different directions, but I keep it focused on Kathy and the other models from the Big Book catalogs.  I've added categories and themes, but that is the primary focus and probably always will be during the life of this blog. Which brings me to......

The Third Big Problem

And that would be the future.  Despite having an abundance of material right now, it certainly won't last forever.  Kathy and the K Clubbers were busy models during that time, but let's face it, there is a finite amount of material out there.  Right now, I have plenty for years three and four, but after that I don't know.  I'm afraid that the material crunch will rear its ugly head again at that time.

Possibly the last pic of Kathy that I will have obtained?  I hope not, but if so it's a great one (well they're all great).  And it would be appropriate that it would be with Shelley whose fansite was a major inspiration for this blog!

But hey, that's still far off.  Let's not worry about that now, and just enjoy the grooviest fashion decade of all time - the 70s!!

footnotes:

(1) You should check out the ShelleyHack.Blogspot.  It is very well done.  We have also re-blogged pics with each other, so I'd like to tell them "Thanks!"

(2) A quick story within a story about how I knew Kathy's first name.  Back in about 1977 (or perhaps it was 78, not sure) I was in the waiting room of an Oral Surgeon's office (had to get the ol' wisdom teeth taken out).  As I shuffled through the stack of old magazines on the end table, I ran across a Bride's magazine with Kathy on the cover.  "Hey that's that cute model in all the catalogs!" I thought.  Deftly covering that mag with a Field and Stream (just reading about hunting elk in Canada, just manly stuff ya know) , I hurriedly flipped over to  the article on her.  She was getting married and that was the subject of the article.  Wouldn't you know that as soon as I started to read it, they were calling me in for the surgery!  I tried to commit her name to memory.  However, with the anesthesia and all the trauma, I kind of forgot about the whole thing.  A couple of days later I thought "Rats, what was the name of that model?  Oh well, it's not like I'll ever NEED it for anything anyway." The only thing I remembered was that her first name was Kathy with a K.  By the way, that Bride's magazine is ironically one of the few glaring omissions from my collection!

Random Goodness: 70s Fall Fashion Fun - Part 3!

0
0
Whoa!  We're well into Autumn and I almost forgot to take another look back on Fall Fashions from the 70s!  Now that just would not do!

Who said that the 70s were all drab and earth tone?  Not these gals!  Kay, Karen, and Kathy start us off with a jolt in "High-Voltage Blues"!  Now that should chase away the Autumn blues, I mean the blues as in the feeling of melancholy not the color blue which these are, which chase away the blues, oh never mind!!

More blues to chase away the blues of Autumn.  Wait I'm getting confused again.  Still Pam and friend look great no matter what.  The "gull wing" lapels were a thing back then in the mid-70s.  Let's hope that fashion statement doesn't make a comeback! (1)

Tired of the blues?  Well how about some shockingly bright red shown here by Pam and Shelley! Nice boots by the way.

"Wait, where are all the drab, subdued browns and grays of Autumn?" you may ask.

Not a chance with high class gals like Kathy around!  I always love the way Aldens tried to make their stuff sound so appealing "Fall-Fresh Toppings in fine flowy Polyester Knits".  Uhhh, how exactly is polyester "flowy"?  And that hat, not sure it's the correct size for Kathy, oh well.

Besides the great smile that Kathy is flashing, there's nothing remarkable about this.  Until, you look at the small inset pics.  Aldens has got some groovy head wear going on there!

Not sure what a "soft shirting" is, but hey, whatever, these gals look great!  Fall was definitely the season for groovy fashions back in the 70s!

Still there's something I'm missing, something that just defined 70s Fall fashion like no other, something so evil, so vile, that it forever scarred me as a youth.  Wait, no, NOOOOOO, not the...............

Leisure suits!  I had to include this for the tortured description of how great they are.  "Look at the styling, the workmanship..." Yeah right. Let's face it, there is no amount of spin that will ever make make wearing a leisure suit a badge of quality.  How in the world did my brother and I ever survive the indignity of these monstrosities I'll never know. (2)

footnotes:

(1) You may notice the American flag themed post in this pic and the next pic with Shelley.  This was the mid-70s and the big bicentennial celebration.  You can see some is this in the Big Book catalogs of the era.  However, like I've mentioned before, it is interesting to see how subdued the whole thing was, at least by today's standards.

(2) You are probably thinking "Hey is he breaking form by including a pic from the men's section?" Well maybe a little.  Don't expect a big change in that direction.   Maybe one or two here and there when they are theme appropriate - like this one with the infamous leisure suits.

Random Weirdness: Bodysuits - Part 6!

0
0
Well, why not followup a "Random Goodness" post with a "Random Weirdness" post?  And what better subject than everyone's favorite clothing article - bodysuits!

With super-cute gals like Kathy and Kay, bodysuits can hardly be called "weird".  Looks like there is a lot of goodness going on here!  Note the small inset pics showing how other articles of clothing can be worn over the bodysuits - like people needed instructions or something?

More bodysuits with more small inset pics showing us how they can used.  Mick Lindberg and Dottie Harris were two of the popular bodysuit models back then and you can see why here!

Shelley and Colleen flip the script here with the bodysuits in the inset pics.  Still they look great! Sears always had The Bodysuit Shop section in their catalogs.  Kind of sounds randomly weird to me!

Kathy and Karen are stepping out in some snazzy turtleneck bodysuits - perfect for winter!  I have to comment on those stairs.  Did they pull them out from a back closet or something? A bit of a random prop to contrast with the stark background, don't you think?

Yes, bodysuits are fun!  and comfortable too!  Why? Well they tell us here!  And they are really fun with the huge scarf thing that Dottie is wearing.

Well the bodysuits were certainly the rage back then.  However, I admit that I really don't get them at all.  Why not just wear a blouse?  Of course, as a guy, I probably don't "get" a lot of things like this. Oh well, we can still enjoy the bodysuits!!

Sizzlin' By the Shore - Part 7, If the Line Fits...

0
0
Well with the warm weather almost behind us (1), we should say a final good bye to Summer by taking a look back at some of the groovy swimwear of the 70s.  And in this post we'll look at a very odd 70s theme that was used to sell swimwear.  I call it 'The Line".

What do a mean by "The Line"?  Well just read on!!

Or rather it should be called "The Dumb Line that they drew right through the middle of these gorgeous models." Apparently the idea was to let gals know that they could buy a different style or size top and bottom parts of their bikini.  They also almost always had the models standing in shallow water all lined up like this, rather odd!

However, like here with Karen, 'The Line" was pretty much just a distraction.  I mean enough already, we get the idea!  Karen isn't standing in shallow water, but obviously she is trying to shield her eyes from that blinding sun!

Hey, finally no line!  but Kathy is still doing that standing in shallow water thing, and Sears is still pushing that whole "Buy the top that fits, buy the bottom that fits" thing.  That smile of hers is a killer!  And you've got to love the psychedelic flower power prints!  Speaking of smiles

Jantzen had some pretty racy ads back in the 60s.  This one is about as tame as they came.  No need for "The Line" here, just wear a smile!

Penneys also tried to get on the whole "Buy the the top that fits, buy the bottom that fits" theme.  However, if you ask me, they fell a little flat.  After reading the header, it almost sounds insulting?!?!  And to top that off, "The Line" is not only a distraction, the way they did it, it actually makes the bodies of the models appear distorted.  Yuck!

See, Sears knows how to do "The Line" thing right.  Note that instead of a drawn line, they cleverly used a a rope!  Those sneaky guys!  Pam Erickson and friend look great, except I have one question. Why are they, and not the guys on the boat, in the knee deep water pulling?

We're back to the models facing the blinding sun with the line drawn right across them, and they are all lined up in shallow water.   This formula must have worked because Sears keep using it.  Still, why did they make these poor gals face the sun like that?  Surely there must a solution to that problem....

Yep, Kathy shows us how!  One way to beat the sun is to just turn your back on the photographer! Let's face it, this pic is almost too hot for words!  Apparently you don't have to buy the top that fits, or any top at all for that matter.  Kathy must have taken that "Just wear a smile" theme form the Jantzen ad a little too far!!

K Club Special (Part 13) - Pat Miles!

For our first K Club Special of our third year, we're going to feature Pat Miles.  The thing is, as popular as she was tin all the Big Book catalogs, I haven't been able to locate any other material from her career.  I'm not saying there wasn't any, I just haven't located any.

Still, there are plenty of great pics of her from those catalogs.  Like here......

Pat was a very common model in the old Big Book catalogs - particularly in the mid to late 70s.  I don't know.  Are these leisure suits for women?  The scarves are nice too!

Here from Sears, Pat shows us just how "lustrous" a dress can be when made from Creslan Acrylic yarn!!  One question: Is that Kathy on the far right?  I can't tell.

Classic JCPenney catalog fashions form the 70s!

Pat and Kay show us some "Soft Dressy Looks".  I love the way Pat is holding that balloon up to her hair, hope she didn't get "static hair" from that!!

Pat at the beach (in a dress?!?!) with the wind in her hair!  I guess they should have used the bandanna shown in the inset pic at the lower right for that pic!

Like I said, Pat's career was mostly from the mid to late 70s, but here she is in the Spiegel Spring / Summer 73 catalog with Karen!  Check out those giant lapels (poke-a-dotted, no less) on Pat's dress!

Another great pic from the same shoot.  Spiegel had a painting theme for this shoot which, with the colorful dresses against the colorful background, made for one wild scene.  It was all good fun typical of the 70s!!

Kathy and Pat in lovely long dresses out for a summer stroll in the park.  Such classically beautiful and elegant ladies.  Yep, every time I go to the park I see sights like this.  Well actually not.  Well nowadays actually you'd be more likely to see women in old tank tops, shorts, and flip flops (ugh). (Pic courtesy of JJ's Playhouse!)

Pat on the cover of the JCPenney Fall /Winter 77 Big Book catalog!  She has an oh-so-serious look here, not sure why?

After Pat retired form modeling in 1980, she has been very busy.  She moved from being in front of the camera to behind it in a number of capacities.  Currently she is a specialist in Human Resources and still working!  She is even on Linkedin!

The Big Book Catalog Series - Part 2 1971 (1st half)

0
Well, I knew this was going to happen when I started the Big Book catalog series.  The first post on 1970 was easy because I could get all of the ones I own in one post.  However, starting in 1971, Kathy's catalog career really took off.  So I'm going to have to split 1971 into two parts.  This one will focus on the Spring / Summer Big Books....

So let's start with Sears!

One thing that all these Big Books had in common was that they were just so much dang fun!  Kathy and Colleen in "Crisp-Textured Charmers" indeed!

What about "Multi-Mixability" to keep the festive mood going?  You've gotta love the knit cap on Karen!

Not to be out done, these gals are all smiles in "Snap-Up Looks".  Is Shelley trying to stand on her toes?  Nah, it's just the extreme height of those clogs!  I wouldn't try sprinting in those things.

That was extra fun, but it's time to move on to Aldens....

Aldens was going for the elegant look here.  Kathy simply looks stunning!

To continue with the ladylike (1) look, here we have some linen gloves.  Now when was the last time you saw those?  Yeah, I know, that's just not in style anymore and that's a shame.

Okay here we go again.  As readers of this blog know, I have a certain problem about the "faux" country look.  In the 70s there were several sporadic periods where "Country Style" was the "Current Rage."  Where I grew up we had an expression "all hat and no cattle" to describe the urbanites trying to be "country." I'd say that here except that here, we have no hats, just knit caps?!???!??

And now from Spiegel...

Looks like they were trying to channel The Partridge Family here.  One thing about fashion of the early 70s, is that you just never knew what was going to be the "in" look from moment to moment. As cool as these outfits were, I think they were an attempt to start a look that basically went "out" pretty much from the start.

Oh bother, not more of the "Urban Cowboy" look.  Well, at least the gauchos are fetching!  Perhaps they were going for more of an Argentine cowboy look.  Okay, I'll let it pass then.

This is plainly ridiculous, no more comments required.

We need to change gears quickly before this post goes completely downhill.  Let's finish this first post on the 1971 Big Books with Penney's....

More fashion confusion evident from the early 70s.  The gal on the left sports a, well, uh, not sure what that outfit is called.  I do like the extra wide, white belt and boots.  Kay's dress is s bit more standard, but check out those shoes, er, sandals, er, whatever they are.  The metal arm band is groovy fun also!

Just about the tie you think that fashion of the early 70s was all about country looks and earth tone wares, along comes a groovy-baby blast of colorful fun from right out of the 60s!  (not that I'm complaining)

A really, really nice pic of Kathy and Karen to end this post.

Random Weirdness: Crazy Catalog Stuff (Part 5) or How Your Parents Took Selfies!

"Grandpa, what kind of cell phones did they have back in the 70s?"

"Son, we didn't have cell phones."

"Geez, Grandpa, How did you take selfies?"

"Well we really didn't take 'selfies' per say, but we used a camera."

"A, a, cam-er-uh, what?"

"Okay, okay, son, it may seem like a primitive era, along time ago, but let me explain..."
"Yes, we had actual cameras that were dedicated to nothing but..... taking pictures!" (1)

"You mean you couldn't send texts them also?!??!?"

"Errr, no, for example..."

"Yes, son, the pictures would magically develop right before your eyes!!"

"And the flash photography...let me tell ya..."

"In the 70s, you knew when you had your picture taken because you couldn't see anything but black spots for 5 minutes!!" (2)

"Grandpa, how did you post those pictures on Facebook?"

"Well, we didn't have anything like that.  But we had something better for sharing pictures with family and friends."
"Let me tell you son, when the slide projector to show pictures of your last vacation came out, you knew that party was going to take off!!"

"Grandpa, I heard that in the 70s you had something called 'key parties'.  Is that what you're talking about?"

"Well, not exactly.  Anyway....."
"To really impress the neighbors, we also had the 'Cube' projectors.  That let everyone know that you were on the cutting edge of the latest technology!"

"Grandpa, it all sounds so difficult.  I mean the clunky cameras, having to wait for the picture, and no way to post them online. Not to mention the expense!"

"Well, yes it was.  And not only that, to take a really good picture required actual skill.  Often times, I couldn't figure out how to work those dadbern contraptions!"

"So, Grandpa, what was the point?"

"Well, the point is this.  Because taking a picture required effort, you had to make sure your picture was worth the effort. For example.."
"Ohh, NOW I see what you're talking about!!"

What to Expect When You Are Expecting - Part 4!

0
0
The 70s Big Book catalogs covered every aspect of life.  Like we've discussed before, they were like our internet back then.  And those Big Books covered every aspect of life - even that "special" time for women.  Yes, they even had you covered then - all of you!

Yes, 'Stylish Super Separates" are just what the new mom-to-be needs to perk her up!  Look at the happy smiles!! That is what I remember when we were expecting (yeah, right).

WOW, talk about stylish!! Kathy and Kay are definitely super styled here!! It almost makes a gal WANT to get pregnant to wear these stylish clothes.  Okay, maybe not...

I'm sorry.  I just don't see "expecting" and plaid going together.  And, let's face it, in the later stages that much plaid ain't going to look too good.

More plaid for the expectant mom.  However, this plaid is a bit more subdued, perfect for the 70s!

No reason you can't join in with all the family activities - including swimming!!

"The Look is Versatile".  Well, it better be!  Fashion in the 70s was all about style and versatility - no matter what the occasion!

Kathy, Karen, and Kay looking hot.  No, wait, they are in maternity clothes so you can't say that, but wait, they are not actually pregnant so it's okay, but still.   Oh heck I'm confused!!

Ahh yes, the cutesy saying.:  "Under Construction" just to let everyone know (as if there was any doubt.) No doubt that shirt will bring back some memories out there!!

Let's face it, the 70s weren't just about discos and bell bottom jeans as we have seen here.  Even when a woman was expecting, she could still expect to stay fashionably attired 70s style thanks to those Big Book catalogs!

Fashion as Couples Therapy (Part 7) Baby It's Cold Outside!

Brrrrr!! Old Man Winter blew in with a vengeance and is it cold!!  Even down here in South Tejas, it's cold (okay relatively speaking).  In 2014 we have "polar vortexes" which I really don't understand.  Back in the 70s, we just called it cold weather.  But not to worry, polar vortex or not, with His n' Hers coordinates form the Big Book catalogs, you could stay extra cozy warm with that special someone!!

"Oh, baby, it's cold outside....." Yes it is.  But what better way to snuggle up to your main squeeze than in matching double breasted pea coats with matching scarves or matching faux-wool shirt jackets!  I like the guy's hat too - very suave!!

"Oh the weather outside is frightful, but inside it's most delightful.." And what better way to snuggle up in warmth by the fire than in matching sweaters!! One thing about the 70s is that they had a thing for collars.  If you wore those collars out today, you'd get some strange looks!

Brrrrr!!  For that really cold wintery blast, you need to bring out the heavy coats.  Still that's no reason to not have matching His n' Hers styles!!  Here they even come in plaid for that Northern lumberjack look!!

This is just like the first pic, except that the guy that WAS with Kathy is now with Karen and the guy that WAS with Kay in the second pic is now with Kathy.  What's going on here?!?!?  Well it was the 70s after all!!

Ahh yes, in the 70s, you weren't a REAL couple unless everything matched - wool hats included. Heck they even have matching pants on!

Yes, even the scarves had to match.  Except, wait a minute here, what is that guy doing in a non-matching hat?!?!?  That is a clear signal that he is wanting his "space".  Not a good sign for this couple at all!

Yep, the matching leather trenchcoats with matching plaid "mufflers".  I hope it is was chilly in the studio because those coats look absolutely suffocating!

Still, no matter how bundled up a couple was in their coats, scarves, and hats, there is one piece of winter apparel that is timeless...

Sweaters says it all!!!  (especially in Wintuk Orlon Acrylic!)

Programming note: I posted early this week since I'm going to be out for a few days.  Next week I'll resume posting on Mondays.  That will give you extra time to dig these groovy winter coordinates. Keep those comments coming, but I probably won't be able to reply for a while.

Models Behaving Badly - Part 2 The Ladies!

0
0
Yes it's been a year since we saw how the men in those 70s catalogs behaved badly.  As I remember it all started with lechery and ended in complete debauchery.  Oh the shame!!  In case you missed it, here is a link to that post.  Be warned however, their boorish behavior is shocking and has no place in decent society!

http://kathyloghry.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html

Now it's the ladies turn.  And I use that term loosely because, while they may seem all sweet and nice on the outside, they certainly were up to no good also!!

"Hey guys, enough already.  You're pulling a little too hard there.  I didn't know he was your boyfriend.  No really I didn't. What, you're pulling harder now.  HEY STOP IT!" Surely that isn't our very own Kathy and Karen pulling that poor gal apart.  I mean it is Thanksgiving week and all, but they're giving her the wishbone treatment here! (Nice boots by the way)

Ahh yes, there was a time when gossip had to be done via an actual telephone.  Note the stylish black color, the sleek smallish size, and the ease of use.  Well maybe not!  These poor gals had to, ***gasp*** SHARE one phone.  OMG!! LMAO!  How did girls survive in this technological wasteland before cell phones?  How was the serious business of daily gossip sustained??

Well, there was always the method of actually talking one-on-one!   Here we have a couple of ladies decked out for the big dinner party and passing some dirt on one of other guests.  Not sure what these ladies think is so darn funny, but it's obvious to me that they're up to no good!

Talk about kicking a girl when she is down!  There are so many questions here.  Did Kathy fall down or was she pushed?!?  Is that gal on the left keeping her down as Kathy struggles to get up?  And why are the gals on the right dancing a jig?  Are they celebrating Kathy's misfortune?  Like I said - so many questions.  There must have been one doozie of a story to put together all these pieces. (1)

Don't worry about Kathy.  She gets her revenge here. Once more, so many questions.  Did Cay fall down or was "helped".  No matter what, Kathy seems to be be holding her down.  What did Cay do that was so horrible?  Once again, there must be something going on here behind the scenes. I guess we'll never know the truth. (1)

Yes, compared to the guys, these ladies bad behavior is more subdued - no exploding golf courses and such.  Still, as you can see here in these pics, there's a lot more going on than meets the eye.

Speaking of keeping an eye on someone.  I have a feeling that there's still someone sneaking around out there...
Yeah, you there gopher.  We know you're still out there stirring up trouble.  So you'd better keep your head down.  Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

K Club Special (Part 14) Kathy and Cay!

0
0
As ya'll know, the K Club officially (1) consists of four catalog models of the 70s whose first names begin with a hard "K" sound - namely Kathy (Loghry), Karen (Bruun), Kay (Campbell), and Colleen (Corby).  But before there was Kathy and Kay, there was Kathy and Cay (Kathy Jackson and Cay Sanderson). (2)

So for this "K Club" post we are going to look at the original Kathy and Cay....

Kathy Jackson was a bit before my time.  Still she was super big in the late 60s and early 70s like in this Breck ad.

Or in this Seventeen cover (what is she doing wearing the British flag?!?!?)

Yeah, she was super sexy too!!.  Dang!!

Of course Cay was also big in that same time frame and sexy too...

Cay in big 60s hair with Colleen!!

Super Cay!!

Not that Cay ever had a problem getting a date, no way!!

Natch we remember both from their Big Book catalog appearances...

Kathy in Aldens,  (With those "groove-a-delic" colors, you can just see Austin Powers moving in for the kill, yeah baby!!)

More Kathy Jackson in Aldens!!

Kathy is smokin' in classic 70s goovy styles from Penney's!!

Of course, Cay held her own, fashion wise...

Yeah "Poplins A-Plenty" for sure with Cay!!

Cay with Wendy Hill, Colleen, and, yep I do believe that is Kathy Jackson in the wig!!

Cay and Wendy again!!  (The flower is a cute touch, by the way)

Cay in 76 on the cover of Redbook!!

Kathy and Cay definitely paved the way for Kathy (Loghry) and Kay (Campbell) in the mid to late 70s.  Those were awesome times, before the internet and cable fame.  Still, these models rocked it hard and deserve their rightful place in the "K Club"...

footnotes;

(1) I use the term "officially" very loosely of course.

(2) Yeah, I know that Kay Campbell's catalog modeling career overlapped their careers by quite a bit.  It is really a personal, subjective viewpoint that I say that.

Random Weirdness: 70s Photo Shop - Magic or Madness, Part 3!

0
0
Yes, it's time to, once again, explore the wonders of 70s photo shopping technology.  And once again we will have to pass judgement on whether these efforts produced magic or madness.  Please remember that this was a time way before all the computer technology that we enjoy today.  Back then, photos hopping required real photography skill (unlike today).  So sit back and enjoy the magic and the madness!!

Yep "It's cold outside", but I'm not sure we're actually outside here.  Looks like a photo shop fail to me! Despite Kathy looking as cute as can be, I have to say this is madness for sure!!

Well, this pic has Kathy and Karen in classic, uber-sexy poses.  Okay, okay, the background is weak. Still, these gals more than make up for the strange superposition of dress style and background.  So you have to agree this photo shop pic is magic!!

Well, Kay and friends are doing their best to save this photos hop effort, but to no avail.  Despite their best efforts, the contrast is just too much for even them to save.  Sorry, the deer sweater and strawberry dress just cannot go with a farm themed background.  Madness for sure!!

Wow, this is either really great photo shopping or ,ahem, they ARE actually outside.  It doesn't matter either way.  That ginormus tie thing that Kay is wearing just wants to make me say "That's sooo 70s!" On that alone, I have to say this is magic!!

See the title is "Top it All Off" and they have a mountain scene behind the models showing us some fine sweaters.  How very clever!! Well maybe not.  I have to give this one the "madness" vote.

Once again, wither the technicians did a great job, or, more likely, Kay is actually outside.  Still that suede combo outfit is magic for sure!

Ahh corduroy from the 70s!!  What a perfect way to end this post.  However, they laid on teh earth tone colors just a bit much for me.  We'll have to say this final photo shop attempt is madness!!
